OpenLegacy is used anytime we need to send data from a modern web application into our iSeries legacy system. At this point, we are still developing the web applications to feed OpenLegacy. Our first use case is entering freight data into our legacy system. With OpenLegacy, we will be able to use a modern web form which is easy for our employees at the freight dock to use, and get data into our legacy system.

“Our companies worked together to connect our software to a customer’s mainframe. Specifically, we needed to be able to scan VSAM files in a structured format. So far, I really can’t say we’ve experienced anything that went poorly. OpenLegacy was able to development enhancements very quickly (sometimes within hours) as we identified new roadblocks to our end goal. Once we put all the features needed in place, everything just worked. OpenLegacy has been solid. It is like an invisible layer that lets our software find whatever data we need on the mainframe. Our customer has been very pleased with the results. This ability to access mainframe data from outside the mainframe is a huge first for the customer.”

Before OpenLegacy, we would either transition our entire system (a huge undertaking) or do painful workarounds to allow for innovative web products to send data back into our system of record.

We would have taken into account the lack of the typical logic we are used to working with. On our end, this probably would have meant more time developing our portion of our solution. The lack of experience led to more of a customized and interactive solution that we won’t try to replicate elsewhere. OpenLegacy is already taking this experience and developing a new application for VSAM.
